Forvo Helps You Speak Like A Native

Learning a foreign language on your own can be frustrating, but it’s much easier if you’ve got a good coach to help you out. Forvo aims to help out by providing a database of words pronounced in various languages by native speakers.

Forvo is still growing, and currently boasts a user base of about 2,700 contributors and 22 editors. Anyone can register and submit new words they’d like to hear pronounced or add their own pronunciations to existing words. The site makes it easy to learn topical words by tagging submissions in groups like fruit, sport, or bad words (for example).

There are currently 186 different languages supported: everything from English, French, Spanish, and Italian to Gaelic, Hawaiian, and Maori. Obviously, some languages are more active than others (read: we want to learn more Maori words!).Learning a particular language? Subscribe to its RSS feed and get new words to pronounce delivered to your news reader - you can even subscribe to a specific category or speaker if you prefer.

Though it’s still in it’s early stages, Forvo has the potential to grow into an incredibly useful resource for anyone wanting to learn a language. On the downside, word pages don’t include definitions; adding them would increase its usefulness immensely. Still, it’s a great project and worth checking out. Sign up, contribute, and help make someone a better speaker!

MoFuse website mobilizer kills Pro accounts, offer Pro features to all

MoFuse ProMoFuse is a service that makes a mobile version of any web site in just a few seconds. We first covered MoFuse last year, when the company was offering a two-tiered service. But last week MoFuse decided to do away with pro accounts and offer all the features to free account holders.

So what do you get with a free account now? You can still create free mobile web pages with URLs ending in .mofuse.mobi (for example, downloadsquad.mofuse.mobi). But you can also use a custom domain, use your own logo in an SMS widget, create up to 5 different mobile sites with one account, and receive up to 50 free SMS messages a month.

MoFuse allows users to place ads on their mobile web sites. Previously free account holders split the revenue from those ads with MoFuse while paid account holders would retain 100% of any revenue generated. If you previously signed up for a paid account, you will no longer be billed, but you will also get to keep 100% of your revenue, while all new MoFuse users will have to share their profits with the company.

Sync and share files with OpenDrive

OpenDrive
BOXSTr has launched a new application, OpenDrive, which simplifies syncing files on your computer with your BOXSTr storage account. The application creates a remote drive on your computer and uploading files is as simple as a copy and paste job.

OpenDrive differs from other file syncing and storage sites in one significant way. Any changes made to files in your computer’s remote drive are saved in real time to your online account, making the syncing process as simple as possible. On a slower internet connection, however, this method does have its drawbacks.

OpenDrive also comes in handy when sharing large files - allowing you to link to them directly from your desktop. Right clicking on any file in your remote drive will provide you with a link to share with friends and family. You also have the option of copying files to a public folder that can be viewed by anyone. If you place music in your OpenDrive folders, you can stream, embed and share songs directly from your BOXSTr account.

While in public beta, users are given 1GB free storage. The application runs on Windows XP and Vista, with a Mac version and direct mobile uploads in the works.

Twitter buys Summize, launches Twitter Search

Twitter Search
As expected, Twitter has purchased Summize, a search engine designed for the micro-blogging service. The pairing seems pretty obvious. While Twitter may have started as a means of individual expression, the service has quickly grown into a repository of news and opinions.

Want to know what people think of the latest blockbuster movie? Just enter the title into Summize and you’ll get a whole slew of results. Want to see what people are saying about a politician? Summize can help. The search engine can also help you find other Twitter users who share your interests, making it easy to expand your own social network.

Twitter has launched a new site that looks and works pretty much exactly like Summize, at search.twitter.com. The only difference is that the new site says Twitter and not Summize. If you visit Summize.com, you’ll automatically be taken to the new site.

Terms of the deal have not been made public, but Silicon Alley Insider reports that Twitter paid $15 million for Summize. It might have made more sense for the company to develop its own search engine in-house. But since somebody’s already done the work, and since Twitter is sitting on a pile of venture capital, an acquisition was probably the easiest way to go.

Self-publishing site Lulu adopts Scribd’s iPaper

Document-sharing site Scribd and online self-publishing service Lulu have teamed up to offer Lulu’s free ebooks in Scribd’s iPaper format. iPaper is designed to be a versatile cross-platform means of displaying different document types online. Key draws include the ability to embed docs in any webpage, including your manuscript in Scribd’s library, and adding ads to your document.

Lulu is a popular self-publishing site, handling print versions and ebook versions of manuscripts, so getting them to start rolling out iPaper is a big win for Scribd. It’s not going to be available for all Lulu books at first, just the most popular free ones. If this catches on, though, the two companies will have all the publishing bases covered, from printed books to iPaper ebooks.

New YouTube “My Videos” interface

YouTube has rolled out its centralized “My Videos” interface to all users. Now you can manage your uploads, playlists, favorites and subscriptions from one location. You can also search across all your videos, filtering by date added, views and ratings. It’s also easier to add videos to a playlist, mark it as a favorite or add it to a quicklist.

Finally, YouTube is starting to really look more “Google-esque” in terms of being clean and easy to navigate.

YouTube Living Legends: Chuck D. and Snoop

The YouTube Living Legends channel features two of hip-hop’s most influential rappers, Chuck D. from Public Enemy and Snoop Dogg. You can submit your questions for Chuck and Snoop to answer, share your personal reflections on the history of hip-hop, and watch testimonials from other artists and hip-hop notables about the role these two men played and continue to play in the genre and the music industry.

Radiohead gets Googlefied

For their latest music video, the band Radiohead decided to forego using cameras to capture information, opting instead for lasers and raw data. Google was happy to help. The video for “House of Cards,” from the band’s latest album “In Rainbows,” used two scanning technologies to capture 3D images. 64 rotating lasers produced all of the exterior backgrounds for the video and captured the 3D objects.

The results are amazing. Check out the official page at Google Code to watch the video, see how it was made, and remix the data yourself.

Webmaster Tools Access Provider program

Google has just introduced a new program that allows qualifying webhosts from around the world to quickly and easily offer Google Webmaster Tools to their customers. Even better, its free.

The Google Webmaster Tools Access Provider program lets users directly plug into Google Webmaster Tools, without having to leave the host. This makes it much easier for customers to take advantage of Google’s services, without having to track down the needed information, so that tasks like creating sitemaps can be more automatic and less confusing.

If your host isn’t already on Google’s radar, send them a not and tell them to get with Google! [via Google Webmaster Central]

GoBootstrap makes business accounting simple

GoBootStrap
If you run a small business, odds are you’ve got some sort of system for tracking income, expenses, and tax payments. But we’re going to bet it’s not as simple as the system offered by GoBootStrap. The web service offers a sort of accounting for dummies style interface. To enter income, just click the income tab, describe the client, assignment, and amount, and you’re all set.

The expenses tab is slightly more complex, in that you need to select from a list of categories like travel, supplies, or rent. But the category list is relatively short, and there’s absolutely no way to add your own clutter with custom categories. While that might seem like a severe limitation, it actually makes sense when you consider what GoBootStrap offers behind tab number 3: Tax estimates.

GoBootStrap examines your income and expenses and lets you know how much you will likely owe on your quarterly estimates taxes. Right now the site only offers estimates for federal taxes, but eventually state taxes will be supported as well.

Will GoBootStrap replace a human accountant anytime soon? Probably not. There’s no replacement for having a trained professional look over your numbers and spot things you and a computer program might have missed. But if you’re looking for a super simple web-based program for simply keeping track of your business accounts, GoBootStrap might be worth checking out. The service is free while in beta, but we get the feeling that the company will eventually start charging a fee.

We also spotted one troublesome line in the company’s terms of use that indicates GoBootStrap can change the terms of service “at any time without notice.” We’re used to seeing companis reserve the right to change terms, but we usually prefer when they take the time to shoot an email out to users to let them know that the terms have changed.
