Between address books and buddy lists, our contacts have become some of the most important data that we deal with every day. Mozilla understands this, so they’ve introduced an experimental Contacts add-on that gathers up your contacts from multiple sites — so far it’s Twitter, Gmail and Apple’s Address Book — and collects them in a browser-based contacts database. That way, your contacts stay with you across all of the different websites you visit.

What are the advantages? Well, you’ll be able to let sites grab your contacts via API, which makes setting up new social accounts a lot easier. Your Mozilla Contacts database will also stay in sync, which theoretically means you could add a friend as a contact on several new sites at once. Another perk is that email autocomplete will suggest recipients from your contacts on any web form.

It sounds like a pretty good idea and it’s built on open standards — so other browsers can easily implement Contacts, too.

Our main man Nik Fletcher loves Spotify — along with just about everyone else on the Continent who has access to the awesome streaming music service. And while just a few days ago it was unclear whether Spotify would ever make the trek across the Atlantic, today we’ve got a definite answer.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has now said that it’s coming later this year to the U.S. In an interview with The Telegraph he also stated that the free U.S. product would be “pretty much” the same as the one offered in Europe, qualifying the “pretty much” by explaining that the upcoming version of the app will “alter the way that people consume the product in terms of sharing, discovery and music management.”

So congratulations to our readers in America, you’ll soon be able to enjoy Spotify’s awesome service! And what about us Canucks?

Surely they won’t shut out a country who still has the Queen on their money, right fellas?

In response to a bunch of recent phishing scams on Twitter — all of which took advantage of Direct Messages and shortened URLs — Twitter has decided to launch its own URL shortener to boost security.

The new shortener is called twt.tl — little? Twittle? I think I get it! — and it will allow Twitter to find malicious links as they’re shortened, rather than waiting until they’ve been direct messaged to everyone under the sun.

But what of Twitter’s url-shortening partner, Bit.ly?

Twitter elevated Bit.ly to the number one spot in the shortening market by making it the default for shortlinks, but it looks like the service might become a casualty of Twitter’s security concerns. That won’t happen for a while, though, because twt.tl’s initial rollout will be for direct messages — and email notifications about direct messages — only. I’d bet on seeing it spread to the public timeline eventually, though.
The tool takes the form of a small app that you can download from Google — all you have to do is install it, run it… and that’s it!

It works with both Exchange 2003 and 2007, and you need to be a Google Apps Premier or Education Edition customer, but other than that… it’s free, quick and seemingly painless — employees can even use Exchange during the migration. Incidentally, if you’re thinking about ‘Going Google’, it’ll cost you $50/year per user (details here)… ‘and it’s never been easier!’

Hey Twitter Tuesday true believers! It’s been a big week, with some of the Twitter crew down in Austin, TX for South by Southwest Interactive. As you may recall, Twitter initially launched at SXSW, and it’s been a huge part of the conference ever since. No surprise, then, that Twitter’s @Ev chose this event to launch a big new Twitter feature. Read on for that announcement, plus apps and add-ons — there’s even some Tweetie news!

Let’s do this thing!

The big news in Twitter this week is the announcement of “@anywhere” during Evan Williams’ SXSW keynote. @anywhere means that Twitter won’t just be limited to Twitter.com and all of the lovely third-party apps and sites I cover in this column. Nope, Twitter will really be … anywhere. Twitter usernames will be popping up all over huge sites like Amazon, eBay, MSNBC and Digg. You’ll eventually be able to bring @anywhere to your own site, too, with just a little bit of Javascript magic.Speaking of that SXSW keynote, it was reportedly about as lively as a sack of potatoes. Ev was about to drop the bomb about @anywhere in the early going, but then the interviewers questions were so long and stultifying that everyone left. There’s some hilarious chatter from the backchannel (which was Twitter, of course) over on Techcrunch. The only other interesting tidbit to come out of the interview was Twitter’s goal to “be a force for good.” That doesn’t remind me at all of the motto of another large tech company. *cough*GOOGLE*cough*.

Twitter also finally turned on its geolocation service for the web this week, just in time for SXSW. You can now tag your tweets by location via Twitter’s website, not just through third-party apps and the API.

Folks who were lucky enough to jump on the MacHeist bundle that was released last week got a little surprise bonus from Atebits software: a license for the upcoming Mac version of Tweetie 2, and access to the forthcoming pre-beta version. There have been some updates to the iPhone version of Tweetie lately, too. What this tells me is that although developer Loren Brichter may be the type to keep his lip zipped about new developments, he’s been hard at work behind the scenes. I’m already itching to try this pre-beta, which is supposedly due soon.

And, speaking of awesome iPhone Twitter clients, one of our favorites was recently purchased! Birdfeed, the pretty, lightweight client with the very useful caching feature for offline reading, has been purchased by Brizzly and turned into Brizzly for iPhone. Brizzly’s a pretty handy web-based Twitter client, so I’m hopeful that the iPhone version will be worthy of Birdfeed’s legacy. Brizzly for iPhone is free, but requires a Brizzly account.

Ever wonder what your tweets would look like, illustrated? Well, you don’t have to have any art skills to find out. A service called Funtweet converts tweets into a sort of mini-postcard format, adding an appropriate background image related to the topic of the tweet. Well, “appropriate” is relative, I suppose. For one of my posts, Funtweet apparently seized upon the word “okay” and gave me Borat in Speedo with two thumbs up. Thanks, Funtweet … I guess.

Need to pick a random contest winner or “Twitterer of the Day” from your followers list? Tweetrandomizer can help. It requires no login or signup, and it makes the process of selecting a random user quite simple. Hey, better than having to write a custom script, eh?

Well, that’s what I’ve got for you this week. Thanks for reading Twitter Tuesday, and don’t forget to come back for next week’s recap of what the Twitter team does during the inevitable post-SXSW hangover.

There’s a lot of desktop software that will allow you to cut an mp3 down to a single short clip, or trim the beginning and end of a recording, but there may be times when such software doesn’t work for you. There’s a lot of desktop software that will allow you to cut an mp3 down to a single short clip, or trim the beginning and end of a recording, but there may be times when such software doesn’t work for you. Maybe you’re on someone else’s computer. Maybe you don’t need all of the features that a versatile app like Audacity has to offer. That’s where CutMp3.net comes in. It’s a simple, Web-based way to trim an mp3 without uploading or re-encoding it.

Okay, I admit, this site doesn’t do much. In fact, it only does one thing: it lets you trim Mp3s by dragging the beginning and end points until you have the selection you want. Of course, you can also play the mp3s to make sure you’ve cut them in the right places. The only issue I had with the site was that you can’t zoom in and out on the waveform, so it takes some sideways scrolling to see the end of your track. (Oh, and a volume control for the player would be nice!)
